Best Practices for Using a Garbage Disposal

To keep your garbage disposal in good shape and maintained properly, we have created a few steps to follow:

  • Run the garbage disposal at least once a week to keep it free of rust and corrosion

  • Only use cold water to flush with; hot water extracts grease from the food, causing higher chances of clogs

  • Clean your garbage disposal once a month by letting the garbage disposal run with cold water for 60 seconds with dish soap in it.

  • Sharpen your garbage disposal once every three months by grinding 2 cups of ice in it

Leaking Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals will normally start to leak after many years of use. This happens if either the internal seal or the top seal gets too old and breaks. The top seal can be replaced, which should keep it from leaking. If the inside seal breaks, it is usually cheaper to replace the entire garbage disposal.

If you find a leak on your garbage disposal, we recommend that you only use it if necessary, and then call Arvada Handyman to get it fixed. Smaller jobs and urgent jobs, we can often fit in our schedule fast, making it easier for you as the costumer.

Garbage Disposal Stopped Working

There can be many reasons for your garbage disposal to stop working. All garbage disposals have a reset button, when looking for it, it is small and red. Sometimes this trips if you put too much food waste in your garbage disposal. If this trips multiple times, we recommend having a professional out to check out your garbage disposal. We certainly can help!

Toilets

Running Toilet

A common issue with older toilets is that they will start to run, without anyone flushing the toilet. This is a waste of water and money. The normal cause of the problem is the toilet flapper. This part can be replaced and it will normally fix the issue. Ways to test the flapper is by trying to push down on it. If the toilet stops running, then you know that the flapper isn’t sealing.

Leaking Toilet

Sometimes your toilet might start leaking. This leak can come from different places, but normally you will find water around the base of the toilet. The normal cause for this is either a broken main seal (wax ring) or the tank seal is not sealing properly anymore.

To fix the main seal, the toilet will have to be removed, then the old seal will be removed, and a new one will be installed. If you hire Arvada Handyman to do this, we will always make sure that all of the potential leaks are taken care, so that you’ll have a leak free toilet. Additionally, we always re-caulk the base of the toilet after the removal.

Toilet Seat

Toilet seats can break or become loose over time. Often this is easy to fix. There are two tightening screws under the toilet. Either remove these to replace the toilet seat, or tighten them, if your seat is loose. If you would rather have a professional do this, we are happy to help you here at Arvada Handyman.

Faucets, Sinks and Shower Heads

Faucets

To keep your faucet in nice condition, it will take some maintenance. We recommend cleaning the aerator twice a year to keep a good water flow and also to make sure that it filters properly. It is also good to keep an eye on the tightness of the faucet. If it starts to get loose, you want to make sure that you tighten it up right away. This is done from underneath the sink where the faucet is mounted to the countertop. Here at Arvada Handyman, we offer all these services.

Sinks

Sinks come in many shapes and sizes. They are used everywhere from the kitchen, to the bathroom, and even in the garage. A common failure point on sinks is the pop-up drain. This either becomes stuck, or you may not be able to close it all the way, or it may be overall broken. The best way to repair these are by cleaning them well, getting all of the grime off. They may need to be replaced if the damage is too much, or if you wish to not clean the grime off. There is a newer style of the pop-up drains, and they do not require a push rod, but are operated by pushing it down directly into the sink’s drain.

Leaking is another common failure with sinks. All sinks are connected to the sewer system with a drain. Over time, the seals in the drain go bad, and they will start leaking. Then it is time to take the drainage apart and replace all of the seals.

Shower Heads

We often see costumers that want their shower head replaced because they want to upgrade to a newer style or a more efficient one. Shower heads come in many different designs and types. Some focus on less water consumption, where others target a specific function or design. The most shower heads have an aerator, which both restrict water flow and function as a type of filter. It is a good idea to take this out and clean it once in a while.

Shower head replacement is one of the things we often do here at Arvada Handyman. We can both supply the new shower head, or install one that you have already bought.
